Testing of windmills in Sisimiut, Greenland

Greenland seeks to investigate how windmills operate in the Arctic. In the autumn of 2018, two windmills were set up in a test center in Sisimiut by the public supply company “Nukissiorfiit”. The company sees great potential in wind energy in areas where there is no access to hydropower or where a hydropower plant is too expensive to build.

The windmills are on 25 KW each and have already shown positive results. The aim is that windmills can be used in the smaller settlements where the current energy supply comes almost solely from diesel engines. To explore good locations for possible future windmills, the company “Nukissiorfiit” plans to begin measuring the wind conditions in amongst others Aasiaat, Qasigiannguit, Nuuk, and Uummannaq.
