Fossil-fuel-free Lyø in Denmark

The small Danish island Lyø seeks to become a fossil-fuel-free island in the future. Faaborg-Midtfyn municipality, to which Lyø belongs, developed a climate vision and strategy in 2013. In the plan, the municipality noted that climate and energy are focus areas in the municipality’s development plan. The overarching goal with the plan is to become independent of fossil fuel by 2050.

In order to reach the goal to become more ecological island, Lyø participated in the project “The village of the future” in 2015. The inhabitants on the island of Lyø worked amongst others on the energy renovation of the housing stock and investigated many different means to become more energy-efficient and sustainable in their energy consumption. The project received financial support from EAFRD (European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development).
