Green and Inclusive Rural Development in the Nordics (2021-2024)
Each Nordic country is different, but also similar. The similarities make it possible to learn from one another, and differences bring uniqueness and locally found solutions. In the Nordic countries, we are in the middle of a radical transition period where all social and economic activities must adapt and mitigate climate and environmental changes. At the same time, a digital transition is ongoing and a recovery period from the covid-19 pandemic lies in front of us. The work of the thematic group is centered around these significant development trends, not to forget the social and demographic trends which are increasing inequality.
The Nordic thematic group for Green and Inclusive Rural Development builds on the work of the previous group for Sustainable Rural Development (find more information below). The new group brings national and regional development representatives and experts together to develop and share new knowledge and to create Nordic added value through collaboration. The group will provide valuable input to policymakers and planners at the national, regional, local, and cross-border levels to develop and plan for green and inclusive rural areas across the Nordic Region. The group is a part of the Nordic Co-operation Programme for Regional Development and Planning 2021-2024 and will contribute to Nordic Vision 2030 to be the most integrated and sustainable region in the world. All activities and projects support the achievement of Agenda 2030 and the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.

The Previous Nordic Thematic Group: Sustainable Rural Development in the Nordics (2017-2020)
The Group on Sustainable Rural Development 2017-2020 studied rural affairs through applied science and sharing best practices between the countries and regions. The current group is partly building its work on the knowledge and projects of the previous programme period. The previous group contributed to the policy development and created Nordic knowledge and tools for the decision-makers and practitioners. The group was a part of the Nordic Co-operation Programme for Regional Development and Planning 2017-2020.
